Line of action : Opportunities for researchers
Secretariat : NWO
Participants : ALW, CW, EW, ZonMw, N, STW
Apply : Yes, you can apply now
Deadline : 1 October 2010

Objective

In cooperation with the Fund for Scientific Research, Flanders, NWO funds the DUBBLE facility, which is part of the synchrotron radiation facility at the ESRF in Grenoble, France. The purpose is to provide access to a synchrotron radiation research facility for Dutch and Flemish researchers.

Application

Who can apply

Dutch and Flemish researchers working in all fields of scholarship.

What can be applied for

Applications can be submitted for beam time at DUBBLE to carry out experiments. This applies to:

  • SAXS/WAXS
  • Interface Diffraction (ID)
  • XAFS
  • Protein Crystallography (PX).

Under a beam time swapping arrangement, applications can also be submitted for the use of the Powder Diffraction (PD) technique at the Swiss-Norwegian beam line. Technical details can be obtained from Dr. Wim Bras (e-mail:bras@esrf.fr), project manager of DUBBLE.

When can be applied

  • Closing date for submitting applications for beam time is 1 October 2010

Extra Information

Applicants can be reimbursed for travel and subsistence costs after the experiments have been conducted. The reimbursement of the expenses is conditional upon submission of a short report on the experiment.

Accommodation at the ESRF guesthouse should be booked with ESRF well in advance. Applicants are advised to travel to Grenoble by train unless road travel is essential in order to transport bulky equipment.

Dutch applicants can be reimbursed for travel (€ 400 per person for max. 3 persons per experiment) and subsistence costs (€ 60 per person per day, including 1 day before and 1 day after the experiment, for max. 3 persons). In order to obtain the reimbursement users are requested to fill in the Experiment Report & Reimbursement Form which can be found at the bottom of this page. The form must be submitted to NWO within 2 months of the experiment’s end date by email to dubble@nwo.nl.

Researchers from Flemish universities and research institutions can obtain travel and subsistence grants for max. three persons from FWO. They must send declarations and reports on experiments to:

Prof. Dr. Lode Wyns
Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Dienst Ultrastructuur
Building E, room E4.1
Pleinlaan 2
B-1050 Brussels, Belgium

Flemish researchers can request any further information they may require by email from ljwyns@vub.ac.be.

Selection

Criteria

Quality, originality, relevance, urgency of the proposal.

Procedure

The application must be submitted through the electronic application system on the ESRF web site. Choose 'CRG Personal: DUBBLE-BM26A (PX or XAFS) or DUBBLE-BM26B (SAXS/WAXS or ID)'.

According to the ESRF regulations, a PhD student cannot submit a proposal as main applicant. Main applicants must be at least at Postdoc level.

All projects are subject to prior approval by the scientific advisory committee of DUBBLE ('Programme Committee').

Since only a limited amount of beam time is available, proposals are granted in the order of priority set by the Committee. Unsuccessful proposals may be placed on a waiting list and granted in case the schedule allows for it.
